2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Melksham Town Council, as well as hundreds of other councils across the country which were created under the Local Government Act 1972.
Originally part of the West Wiltshire District Council formed in 1974, and known as Melksham Urban District Council, Melksham Town is one of five Town Councils of West Wiltshire which remain today.
The Local Government Association say: “The anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate those councils, recognise and highlight the important contribution they make to their communities, and showcase the value of local government. It’s also an opportunity to focus on the people –leaders, councillors, and officers – who have served their local residents over the last half century.”
Melksham Town Council would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all residents, businesses, community groups, councillors and officers from the last 50 years, who have contributed to making Melksham the thriving and welcoming Town it is today.
