VE Day 80 – Melksham Remembers

Thursday, 8 May 2025

Join us for a special day in Melksham as we mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. This is a chance for our community to come together to remember the past, honour those who served, and celebrate the peace they helped secure.

Proclamation and Flag Raising (9:00am, Market Place)
The day begins with a proclamation by the Town Crier and a ceremonial raising of the Union Flag. Everyone is welcome to attend this moving tribute.

VE Day Luncheon (11:30am, Assembly Hall)
Enjoy a community lunch in the Assembly Hall. This is a ticketed event, and spaces are limited.

Tea Dance (2:00pm to 4:00pm, Assembly Hall)
Dance the afternoon away with live music from The Terry Hill Big Band and special guest singers. 1940s-style clothing is encouraged to bring the era to life.

Bell Ringing (6:30pm, St Michael and All Angels Church)
The bells of St Michael’s will ring out in celebration, just as they did 80 years ago when peace was declared.

Beacon Lighting and National Tribute
In the evening, gather for a beacon lighting ceremony and the Lamp Light of Peace. At 9:30pm, we will join the nationwide National Tribute reading, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of all who served in the Second World War.
